Graduate student Jim Brosnan presents in the shadow of Mt. Sugarloaf

Turf managers and their associates from across the Northeast Region are invited to help us welcome summer at University of Massachusetts Turf Research Field Day on Wednesday, June 18, 2008.  As in the past, this year’s event will be held at the Joseph Troll Turf Research Center on River Road in South Deerfield, Massachusetts. Attendees will receive timely updates on ongoing improvements to the Center, including new research plots and a state-of-the-art rain-out shelter under construction.

Field Day 2008 will focus on the research currently taking place at the Joseph Troll Turf Research Center as well as on research being conducted at other locations by University of Massachusetts Turf Program faculty, staff, and graduate students. Attendees can enjoy meeting and speaking with UMass researchers and viewing projects underway. Current research includes studies on the biology and integrated management of turf-damaging insects, turfgrass pathology, short- and long-term weed management, pesticide exposure, fertility, drought management and wear tolerance along with a range of National Turfgrass Evaluation Program turf variety trials. Field Day 2008 will also feature vendor displays and demonstrations. 2 pesticide recertification contact hours in category 37 and 00 have been approved for all New England states

Dean Cleve Willis, Dr. Joseph Troll, and Associate Dean Steve Goodwin

The 2008 educational agenda will feature presentations by UMass researchers on actual field plots. Topics on the agenda include:

NTEP Trials

Our National Turfgrass Evaluation Program (NTEP) sponsored turfgrass trials were accessible for viewing at Field Day 2007. Plots were labeled, and data including monthly turfgrass quality, genetic color, leaf texture, winter and fall color retention, spring green-up, disease tolerance, seedling vigor, drought tolerance as well as other data were provided for select studies.
