Subject: Anthracnose, Gray Leaf Spot

The cooler temperatures and recent rain have allowed turf recovery in many areas. ANTHRACNOSE is prevalent in wet areas of compacted putting greens. Take care not to spread the sticky spores to non-affected areas by washing mowers. This is the optimal time to overseed and renovate turfgrass areas damaged by the summer stress. A severe epidemic of GRAY LEAF SPOT with abundant spore production has been reported from Rutgers University in NJ. Although we do not know how severe the disease will be this year, anyone with perennial ryegrass fairways should have protective fungicides applied. Please watch for any suspicious areas in ryegrass lawns, roughs and fairways and submit them to the diagnostic lab for confirmation, so we can document the extent of the problem in New England.
