Insects
Subject: European Chafers, Black Turfgrass Ataenius, Hyperodes Weevils

The wildly fluctuating weather is making insect activity difficult to predict. We can assume that EUROPEAN CHAFER grubs are already at or near the surface and feeding in eastern parts of the state. The other grub species should be pretty nearly on schedule--back in the root zone in early April in most areas. It is too early to know what is happening with BLACK TURFGRASS ATAENIUS and HYPERODES WEEVILS. We have been collecting relatively large numbers of weevils in their normal overwintering sites. Also, we do have long pitfall traps out in five locations and will know when they start to migrate.
