Nematodes
Subject: Nematodes in Spring

We have already carried out a few nematode assays this year. As in the past we have seen both high and low populations. Many factors affect the nematode populations and we don't have all of the answers. For those who went into the Fall with high populations, I suspect that your populations will start out high this spring. If you had root knot nematodes, and I suggested that you treat the following year, now is the time to treat. Do not delay treatment for root knot. My 1999 trials showed that the May application (3rd week) gave the very best control. Its likely that an earlier treatment would have also been very effective. This is because the juveniles are hatching out now and it is only the juveniles which are killed by the nematicide. Once the juveniles are in the root they are protected and will develop into females which produce hundreds of eggs.
