Subject: Poa Decline, Environmental Factors

The upcoming week looks like more promising and typical May weather for turfgrass. The Poa annua (annual bluegrass) seems to have suffered the most from the temperature fluctuations just at the time of aeration, fertilization, and flowering. In some areas, Pythium root rot played a role in the Poa decline. Nematodes were confirmed as a problem in one sample this week. In other samples, no obvious living pathogen could be confirmed. When large areas of turf show similar symptoms, it is more likely a physical problem related to temperature, etc.
