Date: December 7, 2001 A number of people have been asking about "white lawns." This is caused by the disease powdery mildew. The fungus that causes the disease remains on the leaf surface and looks like lime or flour. It causes little to no damage and requires no treatment. It is extensive this year because of the humid weather with little rain which favors powdery mildew and slows growth of the grass plants. It should disappear when the grass starts growing again in the spring. The powdery mildew on turf will not spread to other plants. Different powdery mildew species infect other ornamental plants. - Submitted by: Dr. Gail Schumann |
