Subject: Preemergence Weed Control

April 2001 was one of the driest on record and, at time of writing, most areas of New England have received little if any rainfall in May. Turf growth is slow and may have ceased in some locations. Monitor for moisture stress.

Preemergence herbicide products for crabgrass and annual weed control need to be watered in. Applications made under dry conditions and in the absence of irrigation may result in poor weed control. Also, the ability of turf to have a competitive advantage over weeds is decreased during periods of moisture stress. Other than irrigation, no action should be taken at this time, including re-application of products. Carefully monitor to determine if crabgrass and other annual weeds are emerging. Postemergence control products can be used at the appropriate time.
