Subject: Tips for Submitting Samples for Disease Diagnosis

When submitting turf samples for disease diagnosis to the UMass Turf Disease Diagnostic Lab, please keep these important points in mind:

  1. Wrap cup-cutter sized plugs completely in newspaper. This keeps the soil from getting on top of the plants and obscuring the disease symptoms.
  2. Pack the wrapped plug(s) snugly in a box (not a shipping bag), so they won't move when you shake the box. They really get thrown around on their journey to UMass.
  3. Use an EXPRESS delivery (e.g. FedEx, UPS, US Mail)- NOT a one-day "priority" or "ground" service. Express deliveries cost more, but are delivered right to the lab. The other services deliver to UMass Distribution Services, which delays delivery for one or more days.
  4. Call before you ship to make sure I am in town. I always leave a message on my voicemail (413-545-3413) or email (schumann@pltpath.umass.edu) when I am away.
  5. Friday shipments will not arrive until Monday, which can lead to deterioration of the sample.

I want you to get an answer as soon as possible, so following these guidelines will help. For complete UMass Turf Disease Diagnostic Lab information, visit the Disease Diagnostics section of this web site. Best wishes for the coming season.
