Subject: Gray Leaf Spot Active in Kentucky

Gray leaf spot of perennial ryegrass is active in Kentucky. This devastating fungal disease caused by Pyricularia grisea can cause severe damage to perennial ryegrass in a short period of time. Fungicides are effective only when used preventively or in the very early stages of the disease. It is a threat primarily in golf course fairways and tees, but those who manage ryegrass lawns and grounds should watch for unusual leaf spot activity. The only certain way to identify the disease is by looking at the spores with a microscope. If you suspect this problem, obtain a diagnosis as soon as possible at URI or Rutgers. Information is posted in the Disease Diagnostics section of this web site. If your golf course has a history of this problem, consider fungicide treatment very soon. In order of effectiveness and length of protection: Heritage™ and Compass™, propiconazole (Banner™, etc.), chlorothalonil.
