Subject: Snow Mold Control

Thanksgiving is coming next week, and cool weather is upon us; time to start thinking about snow mold control. Continue to mow until the turf stops growing. A single application of a combination of fungicides from different chemical groups has been shown to give season-long protection. The fungicide application should be made toward the last week in November but watch the weather forecast because you need to get it down before snow cover. The grass should not be dormant or the systemic fungicide will not be taken up. If you intend on making a second application later on, understand that a systemic material will probably not be distributed in the plant. Dr. Gail Schumann carried out several years of snow mold research here at the University of Massachusetts and the results are available under the title 'Snow Mold Fungicide Trial Summary' in the Online Publications section of this web site.
