THE STOCKBRIDGE SCHOOL OF AGRICULTURE
TURFGRASS MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
COOPERATIVE WORK TRAINING INFORMATION
The turf faculty of the Stockbridge School of Agriculture
work together annually to supervise Cooperative Work Training
arrangements for students. Occupational work experience is required
for Stockbridge School turf students in the three months (June-August)
following completion of the first year of study. Students are responsible
for finding their own internship position, although assistance
is provided by their department. All internship positions must
be approved by academic advisers. Positions which enable students
to gain practical experience in their field of specialization are
encouraged. It is also strongly recommended that students complete
their Cooperative Work Training at a work location different where
they have previously worked, so they can experience a different
management approach.
Deadline and Details: We would like to receive
position listings from the industry by November
15 each year, so
students can make their requests known to the faculty before the
end of the fall semester. The faculty meet during the winter semester
break to develop placement recommendations which will be made known
to students when they return to school at the end of January. Students
will then contact their recommended supervisor to determine if
they will be accepted by the supervisor. If the arrangement is
not acceptable to all parties, students will contact the turf faculty
to discuss alternative options.
Listing a Position: Internship
positions (as well as regular jobs) can be listed on the Stockbridge
School website for free (http://www.umass.edu/stockbridge).
The submission form is available on the web site in the ‘JobNet’ section.
This method is preferable because it is fastest and most effective
way to communicate available internships to students. Alternatively,
position descriptions can be sent to the Stockbridge School Office,
where they will be placed in a notebook for students.
We welcome your comments and suggestions on the
Cooperative Work Training Program. The program would not be possible
without your valuable instruction and supervision of our student
interns. We send our appreciation to all of you who accommodate
these students in your workplace and help prepare them for their
future professional careers.
Please contact us if you have questions or concerns:
