Welcome

A green affected by winter damageWelcome to the online home of the Northeast Winter Injury Initiative. The current effort has grown from a history of worthwhile collaboration between the University of Massachusetts, the USGA Green Section, and concerned and proactive golf course superintendents in the Northeast region. Golf course superintendents who have practiced their craft in this part of the country for any length of time are well-versed in the potential dangers that await intensively-managed turf each winter season. Turf stress and damage from winter injury have become critical issues on many fronts, particularly as superintendents and crews are increasingly challenged to provide pristine playing conditions. Diligent research, however, has begun to hone in on concepts and trends that may help to mitigate winter damage to golf course turf in the future.

Grass sample survival analysis in the green houseA recent study conducted at the University of Massachusetts involved a cadre of responsible golf course personnel located at courses throughout the Northeast region. A dedicated sub-group of these individuals monitored temperatures and recorded data during the winter of 2006-2007. This information is archived on this web site in the 'Site Data' section. Without the valuable input of golf course personnel, this initiative would not be possible. If you have knowledge and information to share and would like to become involved, please visit the 'Contact' section of this web site to get in touch with us. In the meantime, refer to the left-hand menu to explore the various resources available on this web site.
