In an ongoing effort to piece together the winter
injury puzzle, a number of golf course cooperators throughout
the Northeast region actively monitored temperatures during the winter of 2006-07. Cooperators targeted particular greens of interest
on their course, and temperature recording was accomplished
via the use of up-to-date datalogging equipment. Participants who
had green covers in place were instucted to monitor temperatures
both below the cover and above (ambient temperature). Those who
were not using covers monitored temperatures at the height
of the turf canopy as well as overall ambient temperatures. For
specific information about cooperators and site locations, please
visit the 'Cooperators'
section of this web site.
Charts summarizing the data collected are presented below. Readers
are encouraged to examine such aspects as the relationships between
temperatures above and below cover, or the trend differences between
courses using covers and those without. Note in particular the
significant moderating effect that some covers appear to have on
temperature fluctuations. Also, most cooperators had their equipment
programmed to record temperatures once per hour, while a few recorded temperatures every two hours. For clarification, courses
with two-hour data are presented separately.
DISCLAIMER: Although brand names of specific green
covers are used in presentation of the data, no specific endorsement
of any cover brand is intended or implied.
